As summer winds down in Lake Havasu City, the weather may still be warm, but fall is just around the corner. Whether you’re a full time resident, a seasonal visitor or a homeowner prepping for the winter season, now is the perfect time to give your home some TLC. Here’s your go to checklist to help protect your investment, prevent costly repairs and keep your home looking its best year-round. 1. HVAC System Check-Up Our desert summers are no joke and your air conditioning has probably been running nonstop. Before the cooler nights settle in, schedule an HVAC tune-up. A professional can: Inspect and replace filters. Clean coils and check for debris buildup. Ensure your thermostat is calibrated and working efficiently. A well maintained system will keep your home comfortable while running efficiently, which can save on energy costs. 2. Pest Control & Prevention The desert heat can drive pests indoors. As temperatures drop, critters start searching for shelter and the last thing you want is for your home to be on their list! Seal any gaps around doors, windows, and utility entrances. Eliminate standing water around the yard (think bird baths or planters). Keep vegetation trimmed away from the house to minimize pest pathways. Consider a seasonal pest control treatment to stay ahead of the problem. I know a few trusted local providers if you need recommendations! 3. Pool Maintenance for Fall In Havasu, pool season can last well into fall, but it’s still smart to adjust your maintenance routine: Balance water chemistry regularly. Clean out filters and check pumps for wear. Adjust run times — shorter days and cooler nights mean you don’t need to run your pump as long. Inspect your pool area for any cracks, leaks, or potential hazards before winter. Proper care now will save you from major repairs down the road — and keep your pool party ready, just in case! 4. Landscaping & Yard Prep Monsoon season and summer heat can leave your yard looking tired. A little cleanup can go a long way: Trim trees and bushes to prevent overgrowth. Remove dead plants and refresh gravel or mulch areas. Check and adjust irrigation settings to prevent overwatering. This is also a great time to consider planting desert-friendly perennials that will thrive in the cooler months. 5. Roof & Gutter Inspection Our monsoon rains and summer winds can cause hidden damage to your roof and gutters. Before winter: Have your roof inspected for loose or broken tiles. Clear gutters of debris to prevent blockages during rare but heavy rains. Check for water stains or leaks in the attic or ceiling. Bonus Tip for Sellers If you’re thinking of listing your home this fall or winter, this maintenance not only protects your home, but also boosts curb appeal and buyer confidence. A well maintained home stands out in the market . . . especially here in Lake Havasu! Need Local Help? The London Bridge, originally constructed in the 1830s under the design of Scottish engineer John Rennie, was dismantled and relocated to the Arizona desert in the late 1960s. By the 1960s, the London Bridge was no longer adequate for modern traffic and was sinking into the Thames. In 1968, entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch purchased the bridge for $2.46 million, with the intent to use it as a centerpiece for his newly established Lake Havasu City. Each stone of the bridge was meticulously numbered before being shipped through the Panama Canal to California and then transported overland to Arizona. Reassembly began in 1968 and the bridge was completed in 1971. The bridge was reconstructed over a dry land area; subsequently a canal was dredged beneath it, creating the Bridgewater Channel and transforming the adjacent peninsula into an island. Today, the London Bridge serves not only as a functional crossing over the Bridgewater Channel but also as a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors worldwide. On a warm summer day you will find the sandy shores of the channel lined with boats and people who find this an ideal spot to relax and socialize. The bridge’s relocation has been featured in various media, including the 1985 film “Bridge Across Time.” It is also known for its unique features, such as vintage lamps made from melted-down cannons of Napoleon Bonaparte’s army. Whether you’re a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply looking for a one-of-a-kind destination, the London Bridge in Lake Havasu City is a must-see. Walk across a piece of London’s past, enjoy the scenic waterfront and experience the charm of this vibrant desert community. When you visit, you’ll quickly see why so many fall in love with Lake Havasu and why some even decide to stay. Planning a trip? Let me know . . . You know "the London Bridge" isn’t in England and you’ve probably told a tourist the story behind it more than once. You plan your errands around the heat. Anything after 10am in the summer? Nope. You’ve owned at least one water toy . . . jet ski, boat, paddle-board. It’s basically a rite of passage. You’ve been to Desert Storm or Spring Break at least once and maybe have the stories (or sunburns) to prove it. You give directions using landmarks like In-N-Out, Bashas’, Flying X or the channel. GPS is optional when you live here. You know that the leaves on the landscape trees do not change color, however, the license plates on vehicles do. You know monsoon season means crazy skies, quick floods and power flickers. It’s actually kind of exciting. You’ve watched fireworks from the beach or a boat on the lake; because here, that’s tradition. You’ve said “It’s a dry heat” unironically and truly believe 110° isn’t that bad (as long as there's A/C or water nearby). You’ve been stuck behind a boat trailer going 10 mph and didn’t even get mad because, well, it’s normal. You refer to Phoenix as “the city” and anything more than 3 hours away is considered a road trip. You’ve taken sunset photos at Rotary Park or SARA Park and they’re probably still in your camera roll. You know the difference between the channel on a quiet weekday vs. a holiday weekend and plan accordingly. You’ve had sand in your car for months, no matter how many times you vacuum it out. You know the best taco shops and dive bars aren’t on the main drag and you keep them secret from the tourists. You’ve cheered for the Havasu Knights at a football game or at least heard the Friday night lights from your house. You know where the secret coves are and you're not sharing unless someone really earns it. You measure seasons by lake levels and tourist traffic ~ not temperature or dates. You’ve helped push a boat off a sandbar or had yours stuck there at least once. You’ve waved at strangers on the water like you’ve known them forever . . . boat life just hits different. You’ve watched tourists try to pronounce “Mohave” or “Havasu” and smile politely every time. You know when to avoid the launch ramps. Especially during a three-day weekend. You’ve been in at least one group chat about “where the best sandbar party is” and maybe hosted it once or twice. You have a drawer full of tank tops, flip flops and sunglasses. It’s basically the local uniform. ~ Denise Myres Havasu Homes with Denise
